This award has been developed by Lantra Awards with the help and assistance of professional Falconers throughout the UK. It is a formal award intended for those new to Falconry, or those who wish to keep Raptors and/or Owls. It is approved by the Hawk Board and is administered by Lantra Awards. The award assumes that candidates have no previous knowledge or experience and covers aspects of Bird of Prey Management and Husbandry up to flying to the fist on a line or creance.
Further Awards in respect of more advanced Husbandry, Breeding and Falconry may be introduced later to compliment this award and to provide a progression path for candidates.
Structure of the Award
The Award is divided into 2 Units.
Unit 1
Bird of Prey Management and Husbandry
- Module 1 - Housing
- Module 2 - Hygiene
- Module 3 - Feeding and Food Preparation
- Module 4 - Health
Unit 2
Basic Falconry Techniques
- Module 5 - Species Suitability and Legislation.
- Module 6 - Purchasing Your First Bird
- Module 7 - Essential Equipment
- Module 8 - Picking Up and Carrying
- Module 9 - Feeding and Manning
- Module 10 - Weighing and Weight Management
- Module 11 - Flying to the Fist on a Line or Creance
The award can be achieved by anyone who is already a falconer. The folder of evidence can be completed with minimal supervision and the assessment carried out over a single day.
For a complete beginner it will approximately take 5 days to achieve the award.

External Demonstrations
Despite the park being shut for the winter we are keeping our team of demonstration hawks flying. We will be able to provide external flying or static displays. Please call to discuss arrangements.
