The chicken is one of the most common and widespread domestic animals, farmed across the world for its meat and eggs. In the UK the chicken is also popular as a show breed and we have a variety of different breeds here at Blair Drummond.
In the wild, chickens are browsers and will scratch at the soil in search of seeds and insects. They are gregarious birds and live in flocks with some individuals establishing dominance over others (the pecking order!). Male cocks may have spurs on their legs, which they use when fighting other males for breeding rights. Believe it or not, the chicken is one of the closest living relatives to the Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur!
