We are sad to announce that Lola, one of our beloved California sea lions, has died.

Lola was 17 years old, the eldest of our sea lions, and had been experiencing health problems in recent years.  She was under the care of our vet team who concluded that her organs were failing and she was peacefully put to sleep this afternoon.

Shane Belson, Sea Lion Team Leader at Blair Drummond said:

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the loss of Lola.   She has been under the care of our vet team for some time, and unfortunately in recent days it has become clear that her health was declining.   We were faced with the heart breaking decision to put her to sleep, to prevent her from suffering.

Lola was born at Longleat Safari Park in 2004 and arrived at Blair Drummond in 2005.  She has been a popular member of our family here for over 15 years and will be sorely missed by our keepers, members and visitors, who were all immensely fond of her.”

A new sea lion habitat has been built at the Safari Park and will be open to visitors in March 2022.
