A big thumbs-up for our summer holiday programmes
A big part of what we do here at Blair Drummond is about education and awareness. And when conservation awareness starts with young people, then it can be a powerful force for good. That’s why we’re so delighted that both our holiday programmes for kids have been such a big success this year.
Award-winning Safari School
Now in its fourth year, our Safari School for teens runs for four weeks over the summer holidays. In 2019 all our spaces were completely sold out. Over 60 young people joined us to learn more about the animals we care for and the conservation projects we’re involved with. The school proves especially popular with young students wishing to pursue careers in zoology and veterinary medicine, and, we’re delighted to say, recently won a bronze medal at this year’s British and Irish Association of Zoos (BIAZA) Awards!
Outdoor adventures with Jungle Club
Jungle Club was a brand new addition this year, and is our school holiday programme for 8-12 year olds, led by ‘Dangerous Dave’ Sanderson, our Adventure Manager. Previously Head of Outdoor Education at Beaconhurst School, Dave is an experienced outdoor activities leader and has created a pleasant, relaxed and safe environment for children to learn and have fun.
The feedback from parents has been amazing. Action-packed days allowed children to try new outdoor activities such as raft building, orienteering and off-road cycling. They also spent time with our keepers and produced enrichment for the meerkats, fed giraffes, learnt about birds of prey and even had a go at training sea lions!
